The determination of soil cation exchange capacity refers to the total amount of soil cation exchange capacity ( CEc refers to the various cations that can be adsorbed by soil colloid). Acidic and neutral soils are usually determined by the traditional ammonium acetate exchange method. The soil is repeatedly treated with ammonium acetate solution to make the soil saturated with ammonium ions; after washing off excess ammonium acetate with ethanol, the amount of ammonium ions is determined by distillation and converted into Soil cation exchange capacity.

Commonly used methods for the determination of soilcation exchange capacity include : acid and neutral soils use the acetic acid exchange method, and calcareoussoilscanuse the ammonium chloride -ammonium acetateexchange method. The advantages of acetic acid in measuring soil exchange capacity by exchange method are : when acetic acid interacts with base unsaturated soil, it releases weak acid. It will not damage the soil absorption complex, andthe buffering property ofammonium acetate is strong. The pH value is almost unchanged. When it is necessary to measure the composition of exchangeable cations in the solution, the excess acetic acid is easily decomposed by burning, so this method is widely used at home and abroad.
